12 Jul FORTE SAN GIORGIO

There are crystalline waters, and then there are those surrounding the island of Capraia, an arrowhead-shaped oasis on the Tuscan Archipelago. Recently awarded for boasting some of the cleanest seawater in the world, there’s nowhere else quite like it, whether you own a boat or are simply staring out at the waves. But here, what truly spoils sits on land — a sea-front property called Forte San Giorgio.

Built as housing for the island’s entire population in 1540, shuttered and made private in 1910, and restored in 2010, the property has lived several lives — and shows it. This reclusive, castlesque domain looks out over the sea, with a nature-forged path leading directly down to its edge. Above, there’s an infinity pool for those not brave enough to take a dip.
