SAN JUAN ISLANDS BOATHOUSE

SAN JUAN ISLANDS BOATHOUSE

Both literally and figuratively, the San Juan Islands Boathouse is a “threshold between water and land.” The Pacific Northwest retreat replaces a dilapidated structure on the Salish Sea.

It cantilevers off the hillside on a series of steel stilts, allowing the former concrete foundation to be removed and rerstore the coast with native rock. A long ramp from the water to the coastline connects a dock for boats and seaplanes to the doorstep. On shore, a covered deck provides ample outdoor spaces to swell among nature, while floor-to-ceiling glazing keeps the interior in tune with the surrounding landscape.
