05 Jan Kevin Okyere: Transforming Ghana’s Oil Industry
Early Life and Education
Born in 1980 in Ghana’s Ashanti region, Kevin Okyere hails from an affluent family with significant investments in construction, steel manufacturing, and cocoa farming. Demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, he sold iced water at Kumasi Sports Stadium during his youth. He pursued Accounting at George Mason University in Virginia, USA, working various jobs—including caring for mentally challenged patients, serving as a security guard, and working in AOL’s mailroom—to support his studies.
Career Beginnings
After returning to Ghana in 2004, Okyere joined his sister’s business to understand the local market. In 2005, he co-founded Westland Alliance Ltd., providing international call-routing services to companies like AT&T. Recognizing the need for petroleum storage, he invested in building storage tanks near Tema’s refinery, leading to the establishment of Springfield Energy in 2008. GhanaWeb

In 2011, Okyere and Geena Malkani founded Springfield Ashburton, entering Nigeria’s oil market. By 2014, they secured long-term crude oil lifting contracts with Nigeria’s NNPC, marking a significant milestone for a Ghanaian company.
Oil Exploration Ventures
In 2012, Springfield E&P applied for Ghana’s West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP2), previously held by Kosmos Energy and Tullow Oil. After establishing an E&P unit and committing $100 million over seven years, they secured exploration rights in 2016. In 2019, drilling at the Afina-1 well led to significant oil and gas discoveries, increasing proven reserves to 1.5 billion barrels. Limitless Motivation
