Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA EV

At the 2023 Munich Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Concept CLA-Class, a visionary electric vehicle that offers a glimpse into the future of the brand’s compact car lineup. This concept car is built on the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), which will underpin four upcoming compact EVs in various body styles.

Striking Design and Innovative Features

The Concept CLA-Class maintains the sleek “four-door coupe” silhouette reminiscent of the current CLA models.Distinctive design elements include headlights and taillights shaped like the iconic Mercedes-Benz logo and a grille adorned with 264 illuminated stars. An additional 652 stars embellish the glass roof, creating a celestial aesthetic.

Advanced Electric Platform

The MMA platform is engineered around a compact yet efficient battery pack, offering multiple chemistries to suit different preferences. Entry-level models will feature lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, while premium versions will utilize silicon oxide anodes for enhanced performance. This design draws inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX prototype, emphasizing efficiency and long-range capabilities.

Efficient Powertrain and Charging

Equipped with an 800-volt electrical architecture, the Concept CLA-Class supports DC fast charging up to 250 kW, enabling a rapid recharge of up to 248 miles in just 15 minutes. A single electric motor delivers 235 horsepower to the rear wheels through a 2-speed transmission. Notably, the powertrain achieves a remarkable 93% efficiency in transferring power to the road, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Sustainable and Luxurious Interior

The interior showcases sustainable materials, including floor mats woven from bamboo fiber and upholstery made from recycled PET plastics. The Mercedes Superscreen display, similar to the one in the EQXX, utilizes the new MB.OS chip-to-cloud architecture, enhancing software development and user experience.

Advanced Driver Assistance

The Concept CLA-Class features an SAE Level 2 driver-assistance system, with plans to upgrade to Level 3 autonomy in the production model, subject to local regulations. A rear-seat child detection system using sensors that detect breathing patterns is also included, underscoring Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to safety.

The production version of the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV is anticipated to debut in 2024, likely as a 2025 model, marking a significant step toward the brand’s electric future.
