20 Mar Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ: The First Electric G-Wagon
The legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has finally gone electric. The G 580 EQ is a bold step into the future, combining tough off-road abilities with advanced electric power. Starting at AUD $249,900 before on-road costs, it’s $119,000 cheaper than the famous G63 AMG.

Power and Performance
The G 580 EQ has four electric motors—one on each wheel—delivering 580 HP and 1,164 Nm of torque. It can nearly match the G63 AMG in speed. The G-Turn feature (tank turn) allows it to rotate sharply on loose surfaces, making tight off-road turns easy.
Off-Road Excellence
The G 580 EQ keeps the classic G-Wagon’s rugged build. Its ladder-frame chassis and advanced torque vectoring maintain its off-road skills. It can handle water up to 850mm deep, which is 150mm more than the gas-powered G-Class. The battery is well-protected with a strong, 26mm-thick casing.
Efficient Charging and Range
With a 116 kWh battery, the G 580 EQ has a range of 567 km (NEDC tested). While it may not be the longest range, it balances power and durability. Fast DC charging gets the battery to 80% in just 32 minutes.
Modern Design and Luxury
The G 580 EQ keeps its iconic, boxy look but with some changes. It has a small roof spoiler, a modified grille, and a charging box instead of a spare tire. Inside, you’ll find a luxurious cabin with a Burmester 3D Surround Sound System, MBUX infotainment with EV-specific displays, and wireless smartphone charging.
Edition One Model
The Edition One adds exclusive colors like MANUFAKTUR South Sea Blue Magno and Opalite White Bright. It also features blue brake calipers, special 20-inch rims, and a premium interior with Nappa leather and carbon trim.
The Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ isn’t just an electric SUV. It’s a new chapter for a classic. It’s made for those who want power, luxury, and sustainability in one bold package.
